남산서울타워는 한국 최초의 타워(탑) 형태 관광명소다. 서울의 아름다운 모습을 한눈에 내려다볼 수 있는 높은 탑으로, 1969년에 TV, 라디오 방송을 송출하기 위해 세워졌다. 이후 1980년 일반에 공개되었고, 2005년 복합문화공간으로 새로 개장했다.
남산의 높이가 243m(서울타워 건축지점까지)이고 타워 높이가 236.7m에 이르기 때문에 실제 높이는 479.7m 정도이다. 그래서 전망대에 오르면 서울 시내 전체는 물론 날씨가 좋은 날에는 멀리 인천항까지도 볼 수 있다. 타워에는 전망대 외에도 레스토랑, 카페, 기념품 판매점 등의 시설이 있고, 특히 5층에는 회전 전망 레스토랑이 있어 경치를 감상하며 식사를 즐길 수 있다. 매일 저녁 7시부터 자정까지 정시마다 다양한 색채의 조명을 내보내기 때문에 바깥쪽에서 타워의 아름답고 화려한 모습을 감상할 수도 있다.
